Prenatal vitamins
When to Start Taking Prenatal Vitamins
Before Conception (Preconception Care):
Start taking prenatal vitamins at least 1 month before trying to conceive. This ensures your body has enough nutrients to support early fetal development.
Neural tube defects, for example, can occur in the first month of pregnancy, often before you know you're pregnant.
As Soon as You Know You're Pregnant:
If you weren’t taking vitamins before, begin taking them immediately after a positive pregnancy test.
Key Nutrients in Prenatal Vitamins
Look for a prenatal vitamin that includes the following:
Folic Acid (400–800 mcg):
Helps prevent neural tube defects (spina bifida, anencephaly).
Some individuals may need higher doses based on medical history.
Iron (27 mg):
Supports increased blood volume and prevents anemia.
Calcium (1,000 mg):
Strengthens bones and teeth for both you and the baby.
Vitamin D (600–800 IU):
Aids in calcium absorption and supports the immune system.
Iodine (150 mcg):
Essential for fetal brain and thyroid development.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids (DHA and EPA):
Supports brain and eye development.
Can be taken as a separate supplement if not included.
Vitamin B6 (1.9 mg):
May help reduce nausea during early pregnancy.
Zinc and Other Micronutrients:
Important for immune support and overall fetal development.
