Blood tests done in the first trimester of pregnancy

During the first trimester of pregnancy, you may have blood tests to check your blood type, hemoglobin levels, and immunity to certain infections. You may also have tests to screen for diseases and infections.

Blood type and Rh factor
Check your blood type and Rh factor, which is an inherited trait
If you're Rh negative and your partner is Rh positive, you may need an injection around 28 weeks of pregnancy

Hemoglobin levels
Check your hemoglobin levels, which are an indicator of anemia
Low hemoglobin levels can make you feel tired and may affect your pregnancy
Immunity to infections

Check your immunity to rubella (German measles) and chickenpox (varicella)
You may have these tests unless you have proof of vaccination or natural immunity

Screening for diseases and infections
Check for hepatitis B, syphilis, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

Check for tuberculosis (TB)
Check for cystic fibrosis and spinal muscular atrophy
Check for Group B Streptococcus (GBS), a bacterial infection that can be passed from mother to baby during childbirth
You may also have a urinalysis and urine culture
